When Christian rapper Lecrae dropped his critically-acclaimed mixtape, Church Clothes, he wasn’t sure what the response would be.

“It was mission accomplished for me man,” Lecrae recently told Hip Hop Wired. “It was well received…way more incredible responses than I imagined.”

The Houston native and Atlanta resident has been dispelling Christian rapper stereotypes for years and last month’s mixtape managed to bring him more attention from secular rap listeners. Sharp beats (9th Wonder) and choice guests (No Malice of the Clipse) also helped his cause. Speaking to Hip-Hop Wired, Lecrae reveals one of the project’s goals was breaking him out of any narrow Hip-Hop micro-categories.

“I think if you want to impact Hip-Hop as a whole and have a voice within it as a whole, you can’t have your own little niche, your own little thing that you doing while everything else is happening over here,” explains Lecrae. “You gotta say, ‘Man I want to be a part of what’s happening,’ and that’s really what I’ve been trying to do.”
