Phoebe Snow — the singer who sang the first version of the theme song for “A Different World” — died Tuesday morning from complications of a brain hemorrhage she suffered more than a year ago.

She was 58 and was best known for her bluesy 1975 hit “Poetry Man,” which reached the top five and helped define the “singer-songwriter” music of that era.

Later generations also knew her voice from advertisements for companies like Hallmark, AT&T and General Foods International Coffee, for whom she sung “Celebrate the moments of your life.”

Born to white Jewish parents in New York City, many people assumed she was black because of her soulful voice and curly hair.
