Bishop Norman Hutchins Passes Away at 62
We are sad to report that Bishop Norman Hutchins, best known for the Gospel hit “God’s Got a Blessing (With My Name On It!)” has passed away at the age of 62.
A statement released by the Hutchins Family confirmed his passing on June 5, calling the singer and faith leader “a cherished gospel artist, a beacon of faith, and a powerful voice whose music touched countless lives with messages of hope, love, and salvation.”
Born on September 27, 1962, in Delaware, Hutchins showed a calling for ministry early in life, beginning to preach at just eight years old. By the age of 12, he was ordained, a position that helped him support his family amidst challenging circumstances.
Hutchins’ music career began in earnest in 1992 with the release of his self-titled debut album under Sparrow Records. Although his first two albums failed to chart, his move to JDI Records in 1999 marked a turning point. His album Nobody But You broke into the Billboard Gospel Albums chart, followed by a string of successful releases including Battlefield and Spontaneous Praise, Vol. 1. Over the years, Hutchins has seamlessly blended traditional gospel with contemporary influences, creating an uplifting and enduring body of work.
Through his ministry and music, Hutchins has become a pillar of hope and resilience. However, his path was not without trials. A lifelong battle with diabetes led to severe health complications, including temporary blindness and kidney failure. During this time, Hutchins persevered, continuing to preach and inspire others with unwavering faith. His wife Karen donated a kidney to save his life, a testament to the profound partnerships they share in both personal and professional spheres.
Hutchins has also received broad recognition for his contributions to gospel music. With eight Dove Award nominations, multiple Stellar Award nominations, and Grammy nods to his name, he remains a prominent figure in the gospel community. Notable songs like “Jesus I Love You” and “God’s Got a Blessing (With My Name on It)” have become anthems of faith worldwide. Hutchins was also a devoted minister through Frontline Ministries in Dover, Delaware, a church he co-founded with his wife.
His legacy is defined not only by his chart-topping albums but also by the light he brings to those navigating their own battles. Hutchins exemplifies the power of faith and resilience, leaving an indelible mark on gospel music and ministry.
