Changes are coming to Ferguson after a year of turmoil and a disturbing Department of Justice report that implicated the city’s police department in racial profiling practices.

According to NPR, former assistant city manager De’Carlon Seewood will take on the title of Ferguson’s city manager. The nationwide search took eight months after John Shaw’s resignation in March. Seewood was chosen out of 40 applicants. Recently, Seewood served as village manager for the Village of Richton Park, Illinois.

His tenure in Ferguson as the assistant city manager lasted six years, from 2001 to 2007.

A press release from the city says Seewood plans to “bridge the gap for everyone who wants Ferguson to succeed.”

On Tuesday, Ferguson Mayor James Knowles called Seewood the right man for the job.

NPR reports:

“The choice wasn’t easy, but we took into consideration several factors which included experience, fiscal accountability and a commitment to community engagement,” Knowles said in a press release.

Other changes to the city include the opening of the town’s first Starbucks. The Seattle Times reports the coffee chain will partner with Natalie Dubose’s bakery, Natalie’s Cakes and More, to open a store in Spring 2016. The bakery was destroyed during the riots that followed peaceful protests against the decision not to indict Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson in the shooting death of teenager Michael Brown.

Starbucks will also sell DuBose’s caramel cake treats at 11 of its local locations. We’re not sure what that means for gentrification in the area, but we hope the change brings nothing but good.
