Actor David Oyelowo won rave reviews for his portrayal of Martin Luther King Jr. in the critically-acclaimed film Selma, but for his next role he won’t be playing someone so revered. Oyelowo is starring as notorious Atlanta courtroom killer Brian Nichols in the new movie Captive, which comes out on September 18th.

Oyelowo stopped by Praise 102.5 and spoke to Darlene McCoy about the movie and his role as Nichols.

On March 11, 2005, Nichols, who was on trial for rape, escaped police custody at the Fulton County courthouse and shot dead four people — a judge, a court reporter, a deputy and a federal agent. Nichols eventually ended up at Ashley Smith’s apartment in Duluth, where he held her hostage for several hours. During this time Smith, who at the time was a meth addict, read portions of The Purpose Driven Life to Nichols. He ended up releasing her unharmed on March 12th so she could see her daughter.

Captive is based on the book “Unlikely Angel: The Untold Story of the Atlanta Hostage Hero,” written by Ashley Smith with Stacy Mattingly.
