Bernice A. King has been named CEO of The King Center.

The announcement follows King’s departure last year from her role as an elder and pastor at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church. King also declined to take office as the first woman president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference due to infighting within the organization.

The King Center said in a statement that Bernice King’s appointment will ” strengthen the office of the president to more effectively address external affairs on behalf of The King Center and enable the office of the chief executive officer to more efficiently focus on The King Center’s internal administrative matters.”

Dexter Scott King will continue to serve as chairman of the board and Martin Luther King III will remain president.
