Halle Berry recently appeared on CNN, where she revealed that as a little girl, she saw her mother be a victim of domestic abuse. To honor her, Halle has been working at Los Angeles’ Jennesse Center, a women’s shelter that helps families affected by abuse.
Of watching her father abuse her mother, she said, “Honestly, I think I’ve spent my adult life dealing with the sense of low self-esteem that that sort of implanted in me. Before I’m Halle Berry, I’m little Halle, who was a little girl growing in this environment that damaged me in some ways. And I’ve spent my adult life trying to really heal from that.”
Of the Jennesse Center, Halle said, “I love this place. I love helping women and children. I was a victim of domestic violence. It’s what I grew up with, so I have a spot in my soul that understands the devastation that this causes a family and how hard it is to rebuild your self-esteem when you’ve suffered.”
