According to CNN, a 13-year-old New Jersey boy faces assault charges after allegedly attacking the mother of one his classmates. The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office reported that the classmate had reported the 13-year-old to school officials for anti-immigrant taunts.
The mother, Beronica Ruiz was told authorities she was walking down a street in Passaic, New Jersey with her 1-year-old and 12-year-old son on June 19 when the attacked occurred. Her attorney, Daniel Santiago told CNN that the altercation originally started at school the day before the attack. A group of boys including the 13-year-old chanted “go back to Mexico” to a group students in the cafeteria.
According to CNN, Ruiz’s son is an American citizen who then replied to the group of boys, “What are you talking about? We all come from immigrants.” Apparently this rattled the group of boys and allegedly threatened to beat up the boy after school. Ruiz’s son told a teacher about his fear and a security guard then took Ruiz’s son in a classroom for the duration of the school day.
Later that afternoon, Ruiz had picked up her son from school and as they were walking home her son told her that the group of boys that threatened the other day was now following them. CNN reports that the boys caught up with Ruiz’s and her family. The 13-year-old punched Ruiz’s son in the face, resulting him to the land on the ground. Ruiz protected her son by standing in between him and the assailant. She then asked the boys to leave them alone but instead they beat her and swore at her.
After regaining consciousness, Ruiz called the police and was then treated at a nearby hospital for facial fractures and a concussion.
Though the 13-year-old was charged with aggravate assault it has not erased the emotional trauma of this family.
