According to ABC News, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey officially signed the controversial abortion ban into law on Wednesday, May 15. It is expected to face almost immediate legal challenges due to the ban making it a felony for in-state doctors to perform abortions in all cases. The only exception for abortion in Alabama is when the mother’s life is at risk.

Cases that involve rape or incest is not protected by the Alabama Human Life Protection Act.

Representative Terri Collins told ABC News that they wrote the bill in hopes that it will travel to the Supreme Court and overturn the decision of Roe v. Wade, which allowed legal abortions.

Many civil rights groups have gathered together such as ACLU and Planned Parenthood Federation of America. According to ABC News, ACLU posted a tweet stating they “will file a lawsuit to stop this unconstitutional ban.”
