The soundtrack to Birth of a Nation boosts a very diverse lineup of talent.

Alongside Lecrae, Sir the Baptist, Gucci Mane, Lil Wayne, The Game and Nas is K. Michelle, Marko Penn, Ne-Yo, Trey Songz, Raye and more. While the album as a whole is labeled explicit, it does feature some PG content. And both sides occasionally make references to the Bible.

That doesn’t come as a surprise as faith played a big part in slavery and race relations.

Lecrae, who’s been vocal about police brutality and other injustices, addresses a long history of broken families and a misrepresentation of God in a feature track with Leon Bridges called “On My Own.”

A few months ago on Instagram he said, “True faith stands up for the oppressed and the broken…Christians saying that ‘preaching the gospel is all we need’ ignores how sin affects infrastructures and societal systems.” This idea stands out on the inspired-by album in his song, and also aligns with the theme of the movie.

Written and directed by Nate Parker, Birth of a Nation follows the story of a Baptist preacher and slave (Nat Turner) who led a historic rebellion. The movie’s now playing in theaters everywhere.
