In what many are calling a shocker, Venus and Serena Williams – already three-time Olympic doubles gold medalists – experienced their first Olympic loss together on Sunday to Czech Republic pair Lucie Safarova and Barbora Strycova, NBC Olympics reports.
But the 6-3 6-4 loss – following the sisters’ gold wins as a pair in the 2000 Sydney Games, the 2008 Beijing Games, and the 2012 London games – isn’t as “devastating” as the sports world and fans think.
From The Huffington Post:
After their loss, Serena was philosophical about the result and preferred to focus on the success of one of the greatest ever doubles pairings.
“I wouldn’t stay it’s devastating… we had a chance to compete for our country, we did the best that we can. We had a blast out there,” Serena, 34, told reporters.
“We’ve had so many Olympic doubles golds, so many grand slam championships. It’s been unbelievable.”
And the sisters are still winning. Serena won her first round singles match against Daria Gavrilova (6-3 6-2) Sunday and between the two, the sisters have won 15 matches together in the Olympic Games and Grand Slam tournaments, NBC Olympics reports.
The minor setback has proved to be just that to the sisters’ legacy – minor.
