Years ago a woman called my radio show seeking help for her anger issue. I asked ‘Why won’t you let go of the anger?’ She hesitated and said ‘It’s the only thing I can depend on feeling that I know is real. Letting it go means letting go of the only consistent thing I have ever felt.’
What do you do when your pain is also your security blanket?
Moving to a place of unfamiliar healing means having the courage to let go of the familiar hurt. To truly put on new garments, you have to come to grips with the fact that there will be a period of nakedness before the new is experienced. And sometimes facing the naked you is difficult. Like getting naked before a surgery, although uncomfortable.. If the operation will save your life, the nakedness is just a temporary and soon forgotten part of the journey to wholeness.
