Mohamed, 14, received an overwhelming amount of support in September after a photo of the 14-year-old in handcuffs went viral. The teen was detained by Irving police officers and interrogated for over an hour about his clock, which teachers believed was a bomb.
The family is looking to receive $10 million from the city, $5 million from the school district, and an apology from the mayor and police chief of Irving.
Mohamed’s family said the positive international support was appreciated, but their son is dealing with severe psychological trauma and mental anguish over the incident. Because of the viral reception, they believe his “reputation in the global community is permanently scarred.”
The family’s lawyer, Kelly Hollingsworth, added that Mohamed was the victim of Islamophobia. He said the teen has been labeled a terrorist by critics, and bloggers have Photoshopped his face onto Osama bin Laden’s body.
In two letters sent Monday to attorneys representing the school district and the city, attorney Kelly Hollingsworth says that Ahmed’s civil rights were violated by the way the case was handled.
Hollingsworth, who says he was recently retained by the teen’s father, alleges that the teenager was not read his Miranda rights during his arrest and that those involved with the incident tried to cover up mistakes “with a media campaign that further alienated the child at the center of this maelstrom.”
Mohamed is currently living with his family in Qatar after accepting a scholarship offer from the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, but wishes to return to the States.
His family said the city has 60 days to comply with demands or a civil suit will be filed.
