The family of Jahi McMath, the teen who was declared brain-dead after complications from sleep apnea surgery, shared an update about her status on Thursday.
According to Pix 11, the family says Jahi is just as beautiful as ever as her 15th birthday approaches. McMath was 13-years-old when she went under cardiac arrest during her surgery at the Children’s Hospital in Oakland, CA. While she was declared brain-dead, her heart continues to develop.
The family moved to New Jersey and continue to fight against the removal of her life support. In March, they filed a malpractice lawsuit against the hospital.
On Thursday, they shared a photo of the teen on Facebook and asked for prayers.
“Hello everyone. As requested here is the latest pic of Jahi. Our little sleeping beauty is doing great and progressing. She is moving more on her mother’s command. As you can see she is still alive and just as beautiful as ever. Flawless skin! She will be 15 in a few days. Thank you all for the continued love, support and prayers!”
According to The National Review, a court in California recently allowed the teen’s mother to bring about evidence disputing the ruling that Jahi is dead.
The National Review reports:
Declarations from respected physicians have concluded she exhibits neurological functions that are inconsistent with a deceased person. Note that the judge ruled that saying she is dead because a death certificate so declares she is dead will not be determinative if the plaintiff can offer pleadings indicating facts to the contrary.
Chris Dolan, the family’s attorney, is reportedly prepared to present the facts. He added that brain scans have shown McMath is responding to her mother’s verbal commands. McMath’s mother previously told reporters she doesn’t see the teen as brain-dead, but rather “still asleep.”
