A county prosecutor announced the charges Monday following the beating that left 57-year-old Floyd Dent injured. Officer William Melendez allegedly punched Dent 16 times in the video while restraining him in a chokehold. He will be charged with “one count of mistreatment of a prisoner and one count of assault with intent to do great bodily harm,” the site writes.
“We cannot turn our heads when the law enforcer becomes the law breaker,” Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said. “The alleged police brutality in this case cannot and will not be tolerated.”
A drug possession charge against Dent has been dropped. If convicted, Melendez could spend up to 15 years in prison. Last week, Melendez was fired from the Inkster Police Department.
