A drone device was found in a tree on White House grounds earlier this morning at 3 a.m. The discovery was confirmed by Josh Earnest, the Press Secretary, during his update on President Obama’s current travels in India. “There is a device that has been recovered by the Secret Service at the White House. The early indications are that it does not pose any sort of ongoing threat to anybody at the White House,” Earnest revealed.

A Secret Service officer first saw the quadcopter device when it was flying at a “low altitude” before landing. Nothing popped off or leaked, but it did keep 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue on lockdown until 5 a.m. this morning as police and firemen double-checked the premises for clues. Per CBS News, Sasha, Malia and Michelle Obama’s mother were in the vicinity but were not harmed in any way.
Following the inspection, Brian Leary, a Secret Service spokesman told CNN, “An investigation is underway to determine the origin of this commercially available device, motive, and to identify suspects. As additional information becomes available we will update our statement.” Since that statement, a person of interest has been interviewed.
Thankfully this wasn’t a detrimental situation, but flying drones are actually illegal in our nation’s capital and they have become a regular concern for the Secret Service because they still occasionally roam the sky. They often cannot be solidified as recreational or dangerous until in closer contact for research.
And what exactly is a drone? It’s an aerial tool or robot that flies on its own or is pre-programmed by a conductor. While the basic description is relatively tame, drones can be used to transfer or set off perilous missions, which was why White House officials were alarmed.
News sources have added this matter to the list of faux pas that have challenged the Secret Service in the last year, including the appearance of an intruder that actually made into extremely near The White House and the presence of a knife-wielding lunatic.
