250 protestors in Oakland surrounded the city’s police headquarters today and blocked entrances as they shouted “Silence is Violence”, “Black and Breathing” and held signs that read “#Asians4BlackLives.” These acts come after this weekend’s Millions March rallies that took place in New York, Chicago and D.C. and began 7:30 in the morning. By noon, more than 20 were arrested, and the police spokeswoman, Johnna Watson claimed more arrests would be made.

The march began at 455 Seventh Street, and even as it began to rain heavily, when the protestors reached the Interstate Highway at 880, they chained themselves to a pole outside the headquarters, chanted, and held a sit-in on other sides of the building. This protest in comparison to the ones we’ve witnessed from St. Louis to New York was one of the more aggressive attempts, for not only the chains but also the reasoning behind their tactics. The organizer, Samantha Liapes of the Bay Area Solidarity Action Team, told reporters the protest was planned for exactly 4 hours and 28 minutes, and the 28 minutes was based on a study published by the Malcolm X Grassroots Committee, “Operation Ghetto Storm”, that determined every 28 hours a black man is killed in the United States.

According to Bay Area news, it was a calm protest with no major resistance from the protesters that were arrested. Watson, despite promising more arrests, wants to form some kind of trust with the BASAT: “We want to take this very slowly,” Watson said. “We want to work through this methodically. We don’t want to injure anyone. This group is extremely well-organized, and they have communicators and we are communicating with them.”
