Curtis Lofton

Curtis Lofton, linebacker for the Atlanta Falcons and the "Face of Atlanta’s Defense," is ready for an emergency. He knows a disaster could strike at any time, and isn’t taking any chances.

What are the three unique items you plan to include in your Ready kit in addition to the suggested items?

“Ice storms and severe thunderstorms could cause power outages, so I’m going to put my favorite Oklahoma blanket in my Ready kit to keep warm. I would also include ESPN Magazine or Rachel Ray’s cookbook to pass the time. Most importantly, I’d pack extra pet food and water for my two Boxers, Drake and Dora. I’d also include some toys and treats to keep them calm and happy.”

Michael Estimé

Meteorologist Michael Estimé has been a proud Middle Georgian and member of the 41 NBC Forecast Team since January 2009. As an expert in severe weather, Michael knows how important it is to be prepared for whatever Mother Nature brings our way.

“In my Ready kit, I’d toss in an Internet accessible cell phone, so I could track where the showers and storms are relative to my safe place. That cell phone plus an extra battery can come in handy if I needed to call someone in case of an emergency (or if I just wanted to talk with my twin brother to catch up!) Having an emergency contact list with you in your safe spot is important so that you can contact your loved ones and let them know your condition and where you are after the storm.”

Jonathan Reckford

Having visited areas ravaged by disasters, Habitat for Humanity International CEO Jonathan Reckford has seen firsthand the importance of being prepared.

“We would include decks of playing cards and a Bible. I spend quiet time with the Scriptures each day, and I think it would be especially important to listen to the comfort and direction of God’s word in an emergency. Having an activity for the kids (of all ages) helps keep their minds off the emergency.”

Tisha Tallman

As president and CEO of the Georgia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Tisha Tallman helps businesses and entrepreneurs harness every opportunity. And she doesn’t miss an opportunity at home to make sure her family is prepared for a disaster.

“One of the most important items I would include in my Ready kit is one of my dearest possessions, my Rosary, given to me at my confirmation, as I believe part of my response would be prayer. My kit would also include my daughter’s stuffed toy rabbit to assist in comforting her. In addition, I would be certain to have all of my family contact numbers just in case they were needed.”

Stephanie Stuckey Benfield

Georgia House District 85 Representative Stephanie Stuckey Benfield maintains a fresh ready kit and communication plan for her family.

"Our Ready kit includes a 30-day supply of fresh water and lots of canned goods with fish, chicken and other protein-rich items and veggies. We also keep face masks for the family and a solar powered radio. In addition, our kit includes basic emergency medical supplies recommended by FEMA. The key is keeping these items stocked and up-to-date, especially the medication. I try to check periodically to make sure they haven’t expired so we’ll always be ready — just in case!"
