Florida State University quarterback and Heisman Trophy candidate Jameis Winston will not be charged for sexual assault.

State Attorney Willie Meggs made the announcement today (December 5) in a 2pm press conference.

The investigation stemmed from a woman who told police that she was sexually assaulted by an unknown man. She reportedly identified Winston five weeks later as the man who assaulted her. Tallahassee police did not pursue the case, contending that the woman who made the claim did not want to cooperate with investigators. The woman’s attorney has disputed that claim.

Winston’s DNA was discovered on evidence collected at the time of the alleged assault. The quarterback’s attorney has said that Winston and the woman had a consensual encounter. The attorney has scheduled a press conference for 7 p.m. Thursday where Winston is expected to make a statement.

Winston, 19, has led the Florida State Seminoles to an undefeated season and the Seminoles will secure a spot in the BCS National Championship game if they beat Duke in the ACC Championship this weekend.
