Lucinda’s inspiration for Activate Your Life stems from her own experiences; she was unjustly sentenced at 19 years old and felt compelled to create change upon her release. Her mission is to empower and provide support to women who, like her, face challenges in a system that often overlooks their needs. She emphasized the importance of restorative justice, especially for women of color, a group often marginalized in discussions about criminal justice reform.

During the interview, Lucinda also discussed her new voter rights campaign aimed at educating formerly incarcerated individuals about their restored voting rights. She highlighted the fact that many citizens returning from incarceration are unaware they can vote. Lucinda pointed out that in states like D.C., Maine, and Vermont, individuals never lose their voting rights, while others regain them automatically upon release. This initiative aims to mobilize those individuals and encourage them to participate in elections, emphasizing that their voices are crucial for effecting change.

When asked how she would advise young people facing difficult circumstances, Lucinda emphasized the importance of making better decisions and seeking rehabilitation before it’s too late. She candidly stated, “What you are chasing or running from out here is not going to support you when you get inside.” Her message is clear: avoid making choices that could lead to incarceration, as the consequences are life-altering.
In closing, Lucinda urged families and communities to actively support those inside the criminal justice system, encouraging them not just to talk about the issues but to take action. “They need your help now,” she asserted, underscoring the urgency of providing support and resources to those in need.
