Oprah Winfrey is among the five entertainment industry luminaries chosen to receive this year’s Kennedy Center Honors. Presented by the board of trustees of the Kennedy Center for lifetime contributions to American culture through the performing arts, the Kennedy Center honors are an annual event.
The daytime talk-show host stated:
“This feels like an official American citizenship in a very exclusive club of artists … It feels like an elevated kind of award and there aren’t many in this category.” The Kennedy Center Honors are bestowed on performing artists who have contributed to the arena in America, while considering the work of their lifetime and their spirit as a human being.
Oprah Winfrey will be honored along with Sir Paul McCartney, Merle Haggard, Bill T. Jones and Jerry Herman.
