ATLANTA– With an aim to empower residents of West Atlanta to handle everyday legal challenges, the Atlanta University Center Consortium will host the second annual Know Your Rights! Free Legal Information Forum. At the forum, experienced attorneys will share practical self-help tips on how to get a criminal record expunged, advocate for a child with disabilities in public school, appeal a denial for disability benefits, defend against pushy debt collectors, and resolve disputes with difficult landlords. The event is free and open to the public.
Know Your Rights is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 6, 2014, from 9 a.m. – 11:30 a.m., in the Bishop Cornelius P. Henderson Student Center, Multi-Purpose Room at Clark Atlanta University. This year’s event is in partnership with the Atlanta Legal Aid Society and is supported by attorney members of the Gate City Bar Association.
“Know Your Rights, only one aspect of the AUC Consortium’s Communiversity program, debuted last year and boasted a good turn-out of Atlanta residents who wanted to see the forum happen again,” said Sherry Turner, Ph.D., executive director, AUC Consortium, Inc. “Communiversity is a life-long learning program designed to connect the westside COMMunity and the Atlanta University Center through programs that inform, educate and inspire underserved populations.”
Other CommUniversity events slated for 2014-2015 include workshops on the following topics: financial empowerment for adults and high school students; HUD approved homeownership pre-qualification and down payment assistance; small business and non-profit development and technical assistance; leadership development; and making college affordable and accessible. Visit the Consortium’s website at http://www.aucconsortium.org/communiversity for a full schedule of programs designed to strengthen individuals, families and communities.
