A Florida mom was recently sentenced to 20 years in prison for shooting a warning shot in the air at her abusive husband.

Marissa Alexander attempted to use the Florida “Stand Your Ground Law” in her defense of trying to protect herself and her children from her husband, whom she had a protective order against.

Alexander was offered a three-year sentence but rejected the plea. She was found guilty of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Florida’s “10-20-life” law, which was implemented in 1999, was used to incriminate Alexander. According to CBS News, the law guarantees a 20-year sentence for gun use in certain crimes.

Circuit Court Judge James Daniel stated, “Legislature has not given me the discretion to do what the family and many others have asked me to do.”

According to CBS News, “the jury in the case returned a guilty verdict in less than 15 minutes.”
