Toni Braxton made a startling announcement yesterday while giving a speech during the 8th Annual Lupus L.A. Hollywood Bag Ladies Luncheon at the Beverly Wilshire hotel.

“Take a look, this is what lupus looks like,” the six-time Grammy winner said with her mother and sisters at her side.

Her admission to suffering from lupus is just the latest in a series of health problems for Braxton. In 2004, Braxton revealed that she suffered from pericarditis, an inflamation of the lining of the heart. Four years later in 2008, she had a benign tumor removed from one of her breasts. Later that year she was diagnosed with microvascular angina, a small vessel disease.

Lupus is a potentially deadly illness that affects 53 out of every 100,000 people in the United States, and affects more women than men at a rate of nearly 9 to 1.

Pop superstar Lady Gaga recently revealed that she tested “borderline positive” for lupus. Michael Jackson and late rapper J. Dilla also suffered from lupus.
