President Barack Obama is wrapping up a trip to Latin America, but while he was in Brazil this week he took time to visit Rio de Janeiro’s City of God favela, or slum, made famous by the 2002 critically-acclaimed movie of the same name.

With the United States and Brazil having the highest populations of people of African descent outside of Africa, President Obama’s visit to Brazil made headlines partly because of his mixed heritage, with throngs of Brazil’s black citizens clamoring to get a glimpse of Obama.

Brazil’s first female president, Dilma Rousseff, also talked about President Obama’s background and underscored the historic nature of both their presidencies.

While President Obama applauded both America and Brazil’s history of tackling and finally ending slavery, as he did during the presidential election in 2008, Obama was careful not to dwell on the issue of race.
