For Colored Girls may be the first Tyler Perry movie to be nominated for an Oscar. At least that’s what he hopes.

As we previously reported, the Atlanta filmmaker moved up the release date of For Colored Girls to November 5th. It was originally slated for a 2011 release but it appears that Perry wants to make the deadline for Oscar consideration.

For Colored Girls is based on Ntozake Shange’s award-winning 1975 For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf. Comprised of a series of poems, the play revolves around seven women known only by their color dealing with issues of rape, abortion and domestic violence, among others.

Directed by Tyler Perry, the film stars Janet Jackson, Loretta Devine, Kimberly Elise, Thandie Newton, Phylicia Rashad, Anika Noni Rose, Kerry Washington, Whoopi Goldberg, Macy Gray, Michael Ealy, Hill Harper, Khalil Kain, Omari Hardwick and Richard Lawson.
