In a bombshell announcement this afternoon, attorneys representing neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman, who fatally shot unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin, said they have lost contact with their client and will no longer represent him.

According to CNN, legal advisor Craig Sonner said the last time they had contact with Zimmerman was Sunday. Attorney Hal Uhrig said Zimmerman contacted the office of the special prosecutor appointed to lead the investigation on his own.

Uhrig also seemed to suggest that Zimmerman had left the state of Florida, but was still in the United States.

Zimmerman killed Martin in February in Sanford, Florida, a suburb of Orlando, as Martin walked back to the home of his father’s fiance carrying only a bag of Skittled and an Arizona Iced tea.

The case has drawn national outrage with cities across the country holding rallies demanding Zimmerman’s arrest.

Special prosecutor Angela Corey has not indicated when she will decide whether to file charges against Zimmerman, who told police he acted in self-defense.
