Pittsburgh Brentwood High School officials are in hot water for allegedly allowing three students to run on to the court during half-time in full-bodied banana suits, mocking the other team who is mostly African American, according to Yahoo News.

Last Friday, Monessan High School basketball students were returning to their locker rooms, when monkey-clad students were surrounded by Pittsburgh fans who reportedly began making monkey noises and yelling racial epithets.

What’s worse, Brentwood players were said to be taking part in the insults, reportedly calling the Monessan players “monkeys and cotton pickers,” and Director of Security Joseph Kozarian reportedly refused to stop the the racist assault.

Yahoo News reports:

As more media attention has swirled around the disgusting incident, Brentwood officials have scrambled to try and alleviate pressure on the school and district as a whole. As of Tuesday the three students involved had been identified and disciplined, though their punishment was not disclosed to the media. Similarly, officials claimed they were ‘reviewing school policy to make sure a similar incident doesn’t happen again.’

Maybe in Pittsburgh both school officials and residents think this type of behavior is OK, but around the rest of the country, it isn’t. To think that students from Monessan were subjected that type of ridicule and treatment with no one at a higher level stepping in to stop it is unconscionable.

With hope, this incident will continue to get the media attention it deserves, prompting an even higher level of investigation and punishment for all involved. NewsOne will stay abreast of this story.
