Marion Barry has suddenly passed away at the age of 78.

The four-time mayor of Washington, D.C., died this weekend just hours after being released from the hospital. According to CNN, he’d been admitted to Howard University Hospital on Thursday for a urinary tract infection, but he was discharged on Saturday night.

NBC 4 In D.C. reports that he’d been in good spirits before his passing, even stating that he felt “fantabulous.” His health took a turn for the worse early Sunday morning as he returned home from grabbing a bite to eat when he collapsed outside of his residence.

His driver brought him into the house before calling an ambulance, and the politician was rushed to United Medical Center. Sadly, he was pronounced dead around 1:40 a.m.

Marion’s family and friends were devastated by the loss because they expected him to rebound from the medical episode. In his death, his contemporaries haven’t been able to say enough great things about him.

“Marion was not just a colleague but also was a friend with whom I shared many fond moments about governing the city,” said current D.C. Mayor Vincent C. Gray said in a statement. “He loved the District of Columbia and so many Washingtonians loved him.”

Unfortunately, not everyone was so respectful of his legacy. In reporting on his death, TMZ.com labeled him as the “Crack Mayor” as a play on his biggest moment of public shame.

It’s a shame that TMZ chose to shade Marion in death, but this is their typical M.O.
