This discussion has been up for the challenge for years. Those of us who have been raised in church know that the word of God says “Be not drunk with wine” but as time progressed from childhood the question then became “Well what if I drink and I don’t get drunk?”

Socially as a culture we have progressed in such a way that wine is a normal part of life for most people. Without hesitation and without question the majority of people will have a glass of wine or two with dinner. I know that the older I get the more responsible I have realized that I have to be when it comes to certain things. I also understand that the bible says” All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any. (1 Cor. 6:12)

This Scripture makes it plain. So the answer is, YES you can. However you must ask yourself the question, is this helpful and will it control me? If it is not helpful then you may want to second guess whether or not you should do it. If it takes control over you, then definitely refrain from it. The word of God here challenges our choices and simply signifies that you must be responsible for your actions with your soul in mind. Just because you have a glass of wine or two does not mean that you are being sinful. You cross the line when you have it in excess. Basically I believe it is all about monitoring your actions and evaluating your reasons behind doing it. I believe that it is important for us as believers to break away from the religious approach where we are being legalist like the Pharisees were by condemning people who practice certain things such as drinking alcohol or wine. The Pharisees even mocked Jesus and called him a “Wine bibbler”.

I remember a time when I was that person to criticize people for having a drink and I felt like I was doing God justice by telling them that they were wrong. I thought that I was able to speak them into freedom by telling them that they were in sin for drinking an alcoholic beverage. When the true freedom is in knowing what God says in His word about these things. What the bible DOES NOT SAY is that you can’t drink alcohol. What the bible DOES say is to abstain from getting drunk with alcohol. Drinking itself is not a sin– it’s the temptation and follow through on getting wasted for the fun of it. If you would be honest with yourself, plenty of us have been drunk before, and that causes many regrets, sins, in addition to conviction. The great thing is, as with anything you decide to do, make sure that you aren’t justifying yourself by remaining in a sinful state so long that your conscious doesn’t speak out anymore, nor do u have any convictions about the things you do. That is the most dangerous place to find yourself because our God is merciful and allows you to have the freedom of will and choice, He is not going to argue with you about what you are doing. He will allow you to live in a reprobate state of mind. That is where you do not want to be. That is the state of mind where your soul is in danger and your life suffers. Is there ANYTHING worth that?

So to answer the question “Is wine bad”? I would answer that with this statement. If wine were bad, do you think that God would have even allowed Jesus to use wine to represent His Blood in the New Covenant? Think about it. Post your comments below.
