At a press conference today at historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, Bernice King announced that she would surrender her father Martin Luther King Jr.’s Nobel Peace Prize and Bible until a court decides whether or not her brothers should be allowed to sell them. Last month, Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert C. I. McBurney ordered Bernice to turn the items over to the King Estate for safekeeping until he makes a ruling.

As reported earlier, Martin Luther King III and Dexter Scott King, the sons of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. have demanded that daughter Bernice King return their father’s Nobel Peace Prize and personal Bible. The King brothers, who control the family estate, wish to sell the items to a private buyer but Bernice King and several civil rights leaders are staunchly against selling these precious items. President Obama was sworn in using Martin Luther King Jr.’s personal Bible.

Saying that she had already won the moral high ground, Bernice said that her turning over the items was not a setback, but an opportunity for her brothers to do the right thing. She had refused to surrender the items and is being sued by her brothers. The full hearing will take place sometime in September.

Bernice was joined at the press conference by several civil rights leaders, including Rev. Willie Bolden, who worked with Dr. King over 50 years ago.
