We all desire it. Aretha Franklin wrote a song about it.

R-E-S-P-E-C-T

But how well do you function when the people you REALLY desire it from don’t give it to you? Glad you asked. Everyone has SOMETHING that they respect and if you really HAVE to have a particular person’s respect in order to advance, then focus your energy on excelling in the area that they DO respect. For example, a guy may want to be respected for his kind heart and gentlemanly ways, but the person he seeks respect from has more regard for a high beacon score and job security. If you want THAT person’s respect then you have to excel in an area that THEY respect. Let’s not talk about you. Let’s talk about me. I want respect for my 23 years in radio, my smooth baritone voice, and comedic personality. Yet, that has little impact if Radio One (the company I work for) mostly respects social media appeal and brand recognition.

We can typically get the respect we require, but we have to use WISDOM, be GROWN and be HONEST with ourselves about who we really need it from and whether or not we are willing to do what it takes to get it.

Proverbs 22:29 – Do you see someone skilled in their work? They will serve before kings; they will not serve before officials of low rank.
