Friendship Baptist Church has voted overwhelmingly to accept an offer from the city of Atlanta to sell its property to make way for the new Atlanta Falcons football stadium.

The vote at the historic church, founded in 1866, mirrored the vote of its next door neighbor, Mount Vernon Baptist Church, which also voted overwhelmingly to sell its property. Friendship agreed to sell its property for $19.5 million, while Mount Vernon accepted an offer of $14.5 million.

Friendship’s vote clears the way for the new stadium to be built on the south site preferred by city officials, the Falcons and the Georgia World Congress Center Authority for the new stadium. The south site was favored because of its proximity to two MARTA stops, a proposed multi-modal station and the GWCCA’s other facilities, such as Centennial Olympic Park.
