Ten metro Atlanta law officers have been arrested on corruption charges in a federal investigation that alleges the officers facilitated drug deals for a street gang.

An FBI SWAT team arrested the officers on Tuesday for taking payoffs to protect cocaine deals taking place in shopping centers and school parking lots, the AJC reports. Some payoffs were as low as $700 and as high as $7,000. Five alleged accomplices were also arrested.

The arrested officers, some current and former cops, came from several metro Atlanta agencies: Atlanta, Stone Mountain, Forest Park and the DeKalb County police and Sheriff’s Office. Officers from MARTA and a contract agent for the Federal Protective Service were also arrested.

Some of the officers arrested were long-term veterans on the force. The year-long investigation that led to the arrests began in August 2011 as a street gang investigation by the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The FBI took over the police corruption aspect of the investigation.

The street gang involved in the case has not been named.
