The out-of-control gun violence that has gripped Chicago hit especially close to home for President Obama. A 15-year-old girl who performed at some of President Obama’s recent inauguration events has been shot and killed in South Side Chicago.

Hadiya Pendleton was shot in the back in a Chicago park after school Tuesday and died at a city hospital, the Chicago Tribune reports. She was a majorette in the King College Prep High School band, which performed at several inaugural events in Washington, D.C.

According to authorities, Pendleton was one of about 12 teenagers who took shelter from heavy rain under a canopy when a man jumped a fence, ran toward the group and opened fire. A teenage boy was also shot in the leg. Police do no believe Pendleton was the intended target of the shooting.

No arrests have been made, and it doesn’t help that many of the teenagers present are not talking to police. There is an $11,000 reward for any information about the murder.

When asked about Pendleton’s murder in a press conference, Presidential spokesman Jay Carney called the killing a “terrible tragedy.”

“The president and first lady’s thoughts and prayers are with the family of Hadiya Pendleton,” he said. “All of our thoughts and prayers are with her family.”

There are also unconfirmed reports of a petition urging President Obama to attend Pendleton’s funeral, although the White House did not say whether or not the president would attend.
